Dumpster Breath™ Route Program

How to Run a Dumpster Breath™ Route

The step-by-step guide for route operators: one pallet a month, your own trailer, your own customers.

Own a Dumpster Breath™ route the way people own a bread route. Once a month you receive one pallet of 36 pails, and you deliver them to 36 businesses that pay you every month. This guide covers the money, your territory, how to sell door to door, the monthly routine and how to brand your truck. Ready to start? Create your wholesale account online or read the Route Program overview.

The idea

  • The product: Dumpster Breath™ 45 lb pails, granular odor control for dumpsters, compactors and trash areas.
  • Your truck: your own pickup, van or trailer. One pallet is one load a month.
  • Your customers: anyone with a dumpster. Restaurants, shopping centers, commercial parking lots, apartment complexes and HOAs, hotels, grocery stores, car washes, self-storage, schools, churches and medical offices.
  • Your business: you set your price, keep your customers and grow by adding stops. Whiff Industries never sells direct to your accounts at dealer prices.
  • Your brand: you run a Dumpster Breath™ route, with the name on your truck, trailer and shirt, so every stop advertises the next one.

The money

You buy at the volume price of $154 a pail (25 or more pails a month), so a full pallet of 36 pails costs $5,544. Pallet freight from York, PA to the New York tri-state area runs under $200 a pallet, about $5.50 a pail. Retail is $220 a pail; route operators typically charge $275 to $400 a month per stop because they deliver.

Example monthly profit by price per stop (before freight, fuel, insurance and your time)
You charge per stop, per month Profit per pail 1 pallet (36 stops) 2 pallets (72 stops) 3 pallets (108 stops)
$220 $66 $2,376 $4,752 $7,128
$275 $121 $4,356 $8,712 $13,068
$400 $246 $8,856 $17,712 $26,568

These are examples, not a promise of earnings. Your results depend on how many stops you sign and keep, your price and your costs.

  • Start-up cash: your first pallet plus freight, vehicle graphics and supplies (see the starter kit below).
  • Cash flow: bill customers at the start of each month, so their payments cover the next pallet.
  • Under 25 pails a month: the route price is $176 a pail until you reach 25.

Your territory and depot

The program launches in the New York tri-state area (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut). Each operator works an exclusive territory out of a rented self-storage unit that serves as the depot.

  • Why the tri-state first: some of the most dumpsters per square mile in the country, about 3 to 4 hours from our plant in York, PA.
  • Your depot: rent a drive-up unit (ground floor, roll-up door) inside your territory. A 10 × 10 ft unit holds a pallet with room to work; move to 10 × 15 ft when you run two pallets. Your pallet ships to the unit by freight, or you haul it from York with your trailer. Keep pails dry, on the pallet, off the floor.
  • Your exclusive territory: an area sized for about 36 to 100 dumpster stops, such as a few towns, a county or part of a borough. First areas include Brooklyn and Queens, Long Island, Northern NJ, Central NJ, Westchester and Rockland, and Fairfield County, CT. Boundaries are set before you start.
  • Build your first 36 stops one strip of road at a time: every business with a dumpster on one avenue, then the next. Close stops make fast routes.

Selling door to door

Win a stop in one visit: walk the dumpster first, give the 30-second pitch to the person who handles the trash, and offer one free week so they can smell the difference.

  1. Walk the dumpster before you walk in. Note the smell, the flies, the enclosure and how close it is to doors, drive-thrus or neighbors.
  2. Go in at a slow hour. Restaurants between 2 and 4 pm; offices mid-morning. Wear the Dumpster Breath™ shirt and carry a sample shaker.
  3. Ask for the right person: “Who takes care of the dumpster out back?”
  4. Give the 30-second pitch: “Hi, I’m [name] with Dumpster Breath. I run the dumpster odor route in [town]. I noticed your dumpster sits right by your back door. Once a month I drop off Dumpster Breath, a granular odor control you sprinkle in the dumpster, and the smell is gone between pickups. I’d like to give you a free week so you can smell the difference. If you like it, it’s $[price] a month and I handle everything.”
  5. Leave the free trial. Apply a trial amount yourself so they see it done. Write the date and your number on the lid.
  6. Come back in 7 days and close. “How did it smell this week?” Sign them up, collect the first month and set their route day.
  7. Leave a door hanger or card wherever the business is closed or says “not now”, and come back in 30 days.

Daily target to start: 20 doors a day. Track every door: business, contact, result and next visit date.

Answers to common objections

What customers say and how to answer
They say You say
“It’s too expensive.” “What does one complaint, one lost customer or one angry neighbor cost you? Try the free week, and if it doesn’t work, you owe nothing.”
“The hauler takes care of it.” “The hauler empties it; nobody handles the smell between pickups. That’s all I do.”
“We just hose it down.” “Hosing helps on the day. Dumpster Breath keeps working between pickups, with no water running into the drain.”
“I need to ask the owner.” “Can I leave the free week anyway, so they can smell it before they decide? When is the owner in?”
“We tried a spray once.” “Sprays cover the smell for an hour. This goes in the dumpster and keeps working between pickups. Smell it for a week and judge.”
“Is it safe?” “Follow the label: keep it out of reach of children and pets, and don’t eat it. I’ll show you exactly how to use it.”
“Not now.” “No problem. I’m on this street every month; I’ll stop by next month.” Leave a door hanger and note the date.

Promise odor control only: no claims about germs, pests, health or safety beyond the label.

The monthly service routine

  1. Order your next pallet on your wholesale account at the start of the month, or keep a standing monthly order.
  2. Receive it at your storage-unit depot by freight, or haul it from York.
  3. Run your route in the same order each month, grouped by street. Most operators finish in two or three days.
  4. At each stop, drop the pail in the enclosure (or apply the product yourself if that’s part of your service), check the dumpster area and tell the manager about anything they should know.
  5. Bill on the 1st by text, email or an invoicing app, and take card or ACH so payments are automatic.
  6. Keep your customers with a two-minute check-in each visit and a fast fix if anything smells.
  7. Add stops: knock on 5 new doors every route day. Every stop is a sales call.

Apply Dumpster Breath™ as the label directs. One pail per stop per month is the standard service.

Brand on the road

Every operator’s vehicle is a moving billboard. The same Dumpster Breath™ look on every truck, van and trailer lets customers in one town recognize the route in the next.

Vehicle graphics: start small and upgrade
Level What When
1. Starter A pair of door magnets (about 12 × 24 in) and a rear-window decal Day one, on any pickup or van; removable for personal use
2. Trailer Both sides and the back of the trailer: logo, tagline, phone and website When you haul your own pallets
3. Full wrap Van or box-truck wrap from Whiff’s approved artwork Once you run two or more pallets a month

Whiff supplies print-ready artwork so every vehicle matches; get two or three quotes from local sign and wrap shops.

On every vehicle, largest to smallest: the Dumpster Breath™ logo; the tagline “Dumpster Odor Control, Monthly Service”; your local phone number, big enough to read from a parked car; whiffindustries.com; and the line “Independently owned and operated route”.

  • Use only Whiff-supplied artwork; don’t redraw or recolor the logo, and always show the ™ mark.
  • Use odor-only words such as “odor control”. No germ, pest, health or eco claims.
  • Keep one look everywhere: the same shirt, cap, door hangers and cards.
  • Keep the vehicle clean. A dirty truck selling odor control loses the sale.
  • Add a QR code on trailers and door hangers so people can sign up from the parking lot.
